When I wrote my book encouraging women to speak up in church, I got three types of responses from readers:
- This is unbiblical – women need to know their place/stay silent, etc.
- This is unnecessary – women already have equal opportunities
- This is what we need to hear – women have been silent for too long
The first two responses made up less than 10 percent of the feedback. The overwhelming message I heard was, “Thank you for writing this book!”
I heard from gifted women who had been told to stay silent, sit down, and don’t make a fuss.
I heard from women who’d been told God’s plan for their lives was to submit to men and make babies.
I heard from victims of abuse who had been told “it’s your fault,” “forgive him,” and “you can’t leave him, even if he kills you.”
Sadly, this feedback confirmed that we still have a long way to go if we are to model the new creation partnership that Jesus and the apostles spoke about.
